Lap 23 at Midnight
Casey always said the best part of racing was the quiet before the green light—a humming tension where past and future blurred into one long moment. Tonight, though, the air in her room felt thick, buzzing with something beyond nerves. She flexed her hands over the steering wheel mounted to her sturdy GTPLAYER Sim Racing Wheel Stand, double-checking the angle. The stand’s carbon steel frame glinted under LED strips; she adjusted its height one last time, seeking comfort for what she hoped would be just another all-nighter on the circuit.
But this wasn’t just any night. Not after what happened to Jamie.

Her message pinged: "C, I’m going in. If I don’t ping back in 10—call it off."
It’d been fifteen minutes.
Casey’s heart hammered as she slid her feet onto the pedals, feeling their familiar resistance. The GTPLAYER stand didn’t even wobble—a small comfort as she booted up Lap 23, the legendary custom track that had gone dark after rumors of a haunted neural net glitch. The modders called it "The Phantom Circuit," but no one had ever explained why avatars sometimes disappeared there—and why some players never logged out.
The headset hissed static. The room faded as neural sync took hold, and suddenly she was sitting in her digital cockpit: midnight outside, headlights skimming twisted guardrails. Rain smeared across the windshield, unnaturally thick and oily. Jamie’s car was just ahead—abandoned in the pit lane, hazard lights blinking a desperate SOS.
Casey gripped the wheel tighter, adjusting her seat with a quick lever pull on the stand. Even here, some things felt real: the pressure against her palms, the hiss of brakes as she rolled closer to Jamie’s car. She tried the comms channel. Nothing but static and a faint echo of her own voice.
She reached Jamie’s ride and leaned over from her window. His avatar slumped motionless over his own sim rig—a ghost inside a ghost game.
"Jamie!" Her voice trembled. "Wake up!"
His head jerked, avatar flickering between frames like bad TV reception. "Case… you shouldn’t be here." Static fizzled from his lips. "It won’t let me go until someone wins… but it cheats… it changes the rules every lap."
A chill scraped down her spine. "We’ll race together," she said, willing confidence into her tone. "Let’s break its game."
She toggled through her setup—thankful for how easily she could shift pedal positions on her stand with just a twist and lock of its adjustable arms—then gunned it onto Lap 23’s main straight.
The haunted network didn’t waste time: every lap mutated—turns tightened unexpectedly or barriers appeared mid-chicane; phantom cars lunged from nowhere with pixelated shrieks. Casey’s hands shook once when a spectral racer passed right through her hood and whispered in code-laced static: “STAY.”
But Jamie was counting on her.
They crossed Lap 22 side by side—her knuckles whitening on that solid metal wheel mount each time data ghosts tried to jerk them offline or flicker their dashboards into chaos.
Lap 23 began anew; rain hammered harder now, lightning splitting code overhead. Suddenly Jamie’s engine sputtered—a virus glitch chewing at his speed settings—and he spun out toward an infinite black drop-off beyond the track edge.
Casey yanked hard left—her chair rolling smooth thanks to sliding wheels beneath her stand—and clipped his bumper just in time to bring him back onto solid road. The feedback rumbled fiercely through her rig but nothing tipped or rattled; she thanked every ounce of that stand’s build quality for keeping her grounded when adrenaline wanted to tip everything over.
"Don’t let go!" Jamie called, voice clearer now as if fighting his way out of static chains.
They tore down the last stretch together—dodging spectral opponents and shifting track geometries—but Casey never blinked, adjusting position mid-race when fatigue cramped her legs (just a quick seat tweak via GTPLAYER's locking knob). Her focus tunneled in: win together or not at all.
At the finish line: silence. Then—the rain stopped mid-drop; ghosts faded; Jamie’s avatar brightened, regaining full color. He grinned weakly from his seat beside hers in virtual space.
Back in reality, Casey ripped off her headset—the room still buzzing with leftover fear and exhilaration. She glanced down at the foldable stand between her knees, its frame scuffed but unbowed after hours of chaos.
Jamie’s message popped up on-screen: "You saved my ass tonight. Next round’s on me?"
Casey laughed shakily and wheeled the GTPLAYER rig away from center stage with practiced ease—it glided smooth despite all it had been through tonight—and tucked it behind her bed until next time.
Sometimes your best friend is made of steel.
